Older Adult Ministry
Older adults (age 55+) are an active and vital part of our ministry at Hixson United Methodist Church. In addition to participating in the overall life of the congregation, our older adults gather regularly for fellowship and Christian study. We have several Sunday School classes, and two dedicated Older Adult Groups at Hixson UMC (Golden-Agers and XYZ’s).
Additionally, older adults are active in all areas of Sunday worship, including choirs, children’s worship, and as ushers and lay readers. They can also be spotted delivering flowers from the worship service to hospitals and nursing homes in the area, and many are part of the trained lay visitation teams that visit our sick in the hospitals. They are involved in mission teams, help with youth activities, lead prayer groups and Bible Studies.
If are interested in joining an Older Adult Ministry group or would like more information, please contact Bevelle Puffer, our Older Adult Ministry Coordinator.
Current Older Adult Ministry Opportunities:
Golden Agers: First Monday of each month, 12:00-2:00pm
Part of our senior adult ministry, the Golden Agers meet on the first Monday of each month for great food, fellowship and a special program that meets the needs and interests of seniors. Meets in the Fellowship Hall.
XYZ's (eXtra Years of Zest): Third Thursday of each month 7:00-8:30pm
Older adults are an active and vital part of Hixson Church. Members of the XYZ's meet on the third Thursday of each month (except December) for a time of fellowship and a special program. In February and October, the group meets before their program at 6:00pm for a special covered dish dinner. In addition, XYZ members donate time, energy, and funds toward projects in and around the church. This group also gathers for recreation and travel (see a list of trips here). Meets in the Friendship House.
Greeting Card Ministry: Wednesdays from 10:30am-12:00pm
The Greeting Card Ministry gathers each Wednesday morning to make special, hand-made Christian greeting cards which are sold at church and in several local stores to help raise money for such projects as missions, the Worship Center, Community Baskets, and the Child Development Center scholarships. This ministry works in partnership with the Upper Room Sunday School class. Meets in the Scout Hut.
